A brick chimney is one of the most visible parts of a house and one of the hardest working. It stands in the weather all year, and on Long Island that means wind-driven rain, salt air near the shore and freeze-thaw all winter. Home Crew Construction’s masonry work is focused on chimneys: keeping brick and mortar sound, safe and good-looking for homes across Nassau County and Suffolk County, as part of our chimney services.

What damages chimney masonry?

Illustration · Brick & mortarMortar joints wear out first. Repointing replaces them before water gets into the brick.

Almost always, water. Rain soaks into brick and mortar, freezes and expands, and each winter the cracks get a little wider. The usual culprits:

  • Freeze-thaw cycles that crack mortar and pop the faces off bricks (spalling).
  • A cracked or missing crown that lets water straight into the top of the chimney.
  • The wrong mortar used in past repairs. Mortar harder than the brick forces the brick to crack instead of the joint.
  • Age. Mortar wears out long before brick does and needs replacing over the life of the chimney.
  • Settling that cracks the chimney or pulls it away from the house.

Signs your chimney needs masonry work

The same chase, before· Home Crew Construction
  • Cracked, crumbling or missing mortar.
  • Bricks that are flaking, cracked or loose.
  • White, powdery staining on the brick.
  • Mortar grit or pieces of brick on the roof or in the gutters.
  • Water stains inside the house near the chimney.
  • A chimney that leans.

Most masonry damage starts at the top of the chimney, which is the hardest part to see from the ground. If you notice any of these signs from below, the top is usually in worse shape. An inspection tells you exactly what you are dealing with.

Custom masonry and brick cleaning

A rebuild or a new chimney top is a chance to get the details right. We can add stepped (corbelled) brick courses at the top, contrasting brick bands and other details that suit the style of your house, or keep it simple and match what is already there. We show you the options before any brick goes up.

Brick that is structurally sound but stained by water, soot or efflorescence can often be cleaned instead of replaced. Cleaning also makes it easier to see which bricks and joints actually need work, and it is a good step before a waterproofing treatment.

How we approach masonry work

We start by inspecting the whole chimney, not just the damaged patch. Then we tell you what needs doing now, what can wait, and whether repair or rebuilding makes more sense. When we repair, we match brick size and color and mortar color as closely as we can, so the work blends in. When we finish, we clean the brick and the site before we leave.

Masonry, flashing and roofing from one crew

Illustration · FlashingMetal that seals the gap where the chimney meets the roof.

Masonry problems at the top of a chimney often come with flashing and roof problems. Because we also do chimney flashing and roofing, we can fix the brick, the flashing and the shingles around it in one job, without separate contractors.

Masonry FAQ

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

What is spalling brick?

Spalling is when the face of a brick flakes, cracks or pops off. It happens when water inside the brick freezes and expands. Spalled bricks let in even more water and should be replaced.

02

Can you match my existing brick and mortar?

We match brick size and color, and mortar color and texture, as closely as we can with available materials. New work can look slightly different at first and blends in as it weathers.

03

Is it better to repair or rebuild a damaged chimney?

If the damage is limited to some joints, a few bricks or the crown, repair is the right call. If bricks are loose throughout the top or the chimney leans, rebuilding is usually the better investment. We tell you which after an inspection.

04

Do you clean brick?

Yes. Brickwork cleaning removes staining, efflorescence and grime, using methods suited to the brick so the surface isn’t damaged.
