Chimney rebuilding means taking the damaged masonry down to solid brick and building it back up with new brick, new mortar and a new crown. It is the right fix when repairs would only buy another season or two. Home Crew Construction rebuilds chimneys across Long Island, in Nassau County and Suffolk County, from short rebuilds above the roofline to full tear-downs.

Quick answer: When does a chimney need to be rebuilt?

A chimney usually needs rebuilding when bricks are loose across the top, the chimney leans or has pulled away from the house, or the masonry is crumbling faster than repairs can keep up. Home Crew Construction rebuilds chimneys across Long Island, often only the section above the roofline, where weather does the most damage.

We always look at repair first. A few bad bricks, a cracked crown or worn mortar joints can usually be repaired or repointed. A rebuild makes sense when:

  • Bricks are loose or missing across the top courses, not just in one spot.
  • The chimney leans, has cracked through, or is pulling away from the house.
  • Spalling covers large areas of the brick.
  • The mortar is soft and sandy throughout, so repointing would mean replacing nearly all of it.
  • Water has been getting in for years and the inside of the chimney has broken down.
  • The chimney was badly built or badly patched in the past.

Partial vs. full chimney rebuild

Partial rebuild. The part of the chimney above the roofline takes the most weather, so it usually fails first. We take the chimney down to the point where the brick is solid, often at or just below the roof, and rebuild from there. This is the most common kind of rebuild.

Full rebuild. If the damage runs all the way down, or the chimney is leaning or structurally unsound, we take it down to the base and rebuild the whole chimney.

Matching the look of your home

A rebuilt chimney should look like it belongs on the house. We match brick color and size as closely as we can, and tint the mortar to suit, or help you choose something new if you want a change. Whether your house calls for a traditional red brick chimney or a cleaner, more modern look, we show you the options before any work starts.

When a chimney becomes unsafe

A badly deteriorated chimney is more than a leak risk. Loose bricks at the top can fall onto the roof, a driveway or a walkway. A leaning chimney can pull away from the house and open a gap at the roofline. Cracked flue tiles inside can let heat and smoke reach the framing. If you see bricks on the roof, a visible lean or a crack running through the chimney, stop using the fireplace, keep people clear of that side of the house and call us to take a look.

Freeze-thaw cycles and wind-driven rain are what break chimneys down here. A rebuild is the chance to fix whatever caused the failure in the first place: a properly formed crown with a drip edge, correctly installed chimney flashing, a cap to keep rain out of the flue, and a breathable waterproofing treatment if the brick needs it.

Chimney rebuilding FAQ

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

Do I need to rebuild the whole chimney?

Usually not. Many rebuilds only cover the section above the roofline, where the weather does the most damage. A full rebuild is needed when the damage runs further down or the chimney is structurally unsound.

02

Can you match my existing brick?

We match color and size as closely as we can with the brick that’s available. On a partial rebuild, we show you options so the new section blends in with the old.

03

Will a rebuild stop my chimney leak?

A rebuild replaces the brick, mortar, crown and flashing, which are the usual leak points on a chimney. We also check the roof around the chimney, since some leaks start there.

04

What time of year is best for a chimney rebuild?

Spring through fall, when temperatures stay above freezing so the mortar can cure properly. If a chimney is leaking badly or unsafe in winter, call us and we’ll stop the water until it can be rebuilt.
