Clogged gutters cause a lot of water damage that never had to happen. Leaves, pine needles, seed pods and shingle grit settle in the gutter and pack the downspouts. The next heavy rain has nowhere to go but over the edge, down the siding and into the ground next to your foundation.

Home Crew Construction offers gutter cleaning on Long Island for homes in Nassau County and Suffolk County. We clean by hand, flush every downspout and look over the system while we’re on the ladder, so you hear about problems before they cost you.

Quick answer: How often should gutters be cleaned on Long Island?

Most Long Island homes need gutter cleaning twice a year, in late spring and again after the leaves fall. Homes under tall trees may need it more often. Home Crew Construction cleans gutters by hand across Nassau and Suffolk County, flushes the downspouts and checks for leaks and loose sections.

How it works

How gutters move the water.

A gutter system catches the water off your roof and carries it away from the walls and foundation.

Why gutter cleaning matters

A clogged gutter causes damage in several places at once:

  • Foundation and basement. Overflow soaks the soil against the wall, which can lead to cracks and a wet basement.
  • Fascia and roof edge. Water that backs up behind the gutter rots the fascia board and can reach the roof deck.
  • Siding and paint. Overflow leaves stains, peels paint and can get behind siding panels.
  • The gutters themselves. Wet debris is heavy. It pulls on the hangers until the gutter sags, and it holds moisture against the metal.
  • Ice and pests. In winter a clogged gutter fills with ice. In summer, standing water draws mosquitoes, and wet debris draws nesting birds and insects.

Our gutter cleaning process

  1. Look firstWe check the gutters, downspouts and roof edge before we start, so we can point out anything that needs attention.
  2. Clean by handWe scoop out leaves, needles, grit and nests from every run and bag the debris.
  3. Flush the downspoutsWe run water through the gutters and each downspout to confirm a clear flow. Blocked downspouts get cleared.
  4. Check for problemsWhile the water runs, we watch for leaking seams, low spots that hold water and loose hangers.
  5. Clean upWe pick up whatever falls on the lawn, walkways and beds, and take the debris with us.

If we find a problem, we’ll show you and give you a price before any extra work. Nothing gets added without your OK. Bigger issues get their own gutter repair quote.

How often should you clean your gutters?

Twice a year works for most Long Island homes:

  • Late spring, after the trees drop their flowers, seed pods and “helicopters”
  • Late fall, after the leaves are down and before freezing weather sets in

If your house sits under oaks, maples or pines, plan on a third cleaning, usually in mid-fall when the leaves drop fastest. Pine needles are especially stubborn, because they mat together and plug downspouts.

Pay attention to what comes out of the gutters, too. A lot of shingle granules can be a sign the roof is wearing out. If we see that, we’ll tell you, and we handle roof repairs as well.

Signs your gutters need cleaning now

  • Water spilling over the gutter edge in the rain
  • Plants, moss or seedlings growing out of the gutter
  • Gutters that sag in the middle of a run
  • Little or no water coming out of the downspouts during a storm
  • Stains or streaks on the siding directly under the gutter
  • Birds or insects nesting along the roofline

Is it worth hiring someone to clean your gutters?

Plenty of homeowners do it themselves, but it’s ladder work, often two stories up, while leaning out and pulling wet debris. That’s one of the riskier jobs around the house. Our crew does it with the right ladders and equipment and gets it done quickly.

A professional cleaning also comes with a second set of eyes. We notice the loose hanger, the leaking corner or the worn shingles at the roof edge that are easy to miss from the ground.

Tired of cleaning your gutters?

Illustration · Gutter guardA screen over the top that keeps leaves and debris out.

If your gutters fill up every few weeks in the fall, gutter guards can cut down on how often they need cleaning. Guards don’t make gutters maintenance-free, but they keep most leaves and twigs out. And if your gutters sag, leak at every seam or are too small for your roof, gutter replacement may be the better long-term fix. See all our gutter services.

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Twice a year, in spring and fall. If your home is surrounded by trees, more frequent cleaning may be needed to prevent clogs.

02

Do you flush the downspouts during a gutter cleaning?

Yes. After we clean the gutters by hand, we run water through each downspout to make sure it drains. If a downspout is blocked, we clear it.

03

Will you tell me if my gutters need repair?

Yes. We check for leaking seams, sagging runs and loose hangers during the cleaning. If we find something, we show you and give you a price. No extra work is done without your OK.

04

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean my gutters?

No. Guards keep most leaves and debris out and cut down on how often gutters need cleaning, but fine debris can still build up. An occasional check is still a good idea.
