New siding changes how a house looks and how well it holds up. Done right, it keeps water out of the walls, cuts drafts and gives the home a clean, finished look for many years. Done wrong, with gaps at the windows, missing flashing or panels nailed too tight, it can trap water and buckle in the first hot summer.

Home Crew Construction handles siding installation on Long Island for homes in Nassau County and Suffolk County: new construction, additions and full exterior makeovers. It’s one part of our siding services, and we take as much care with the parts you’ll never see as with the parts you will.

Quick answer: How long does siding installation take?

Siding installation on a typical Long Island home takes several days to a week, depending on the size of the house and the material. Home Crew Construction installs vinyl, fiber cement and cedar siding across Nassau and Suffolk County, with a free quote and a full clean-up before the crew leaves.

How it works

What's behind your siding.

Siding is the part you see. What keeps the wall dry is the whole assembly behind it.

Choosing your siding material

  • Vinyl. Budget-friendly, low-maintenance and available in many colors, profiles and textures. It never needs painting and cleans up with a hose.
  • Fiber cement. A heavier, more rigid board that stands up better to weather, impact and sun. It can be painted any color and looks like wood clapboard or shingles.
  • Cedar and wood. Natural shingles or clapboard for traditional and shore-style homes. They look great but need regular staining or painting.
  • Aluminum. Less common on new jobs today, but we work with it where it suits the house.

Materials we install include James Hardie fiber cement and Royal siding and trim. We’ll help you weigh cost, upkeep and looks for your house and your budget.

What makes a siding installation last?

The siding you see is only the top layer. What’s underneath decides whether it lasts:

  • Sound sheathing. We check the wall sheathing and fix soft or damaged areas before anything goes over it.
  • A weather-resistant barrier. House wrap sheds any water that gets behind the siding and cuts air leaks.
  • Flashing at every opening. Windows, doors, corners and the line where the roof meets the wall get flashed, so water is directed out, not in.
  • Room to move. Vinyl expands and contracts with the temperature. It has to be hung loosely enough to move, or it buckles.
  • Clean trim and details. Corners, channels and trim are fitted neatly, because that’s where water gets in first and where the eye goes first.

How long does siding installation take?

Illustration · SidingThe outer layer: vinyl or fiber cement courses that shed the rain and take the weather.

Most homes take several days to a week, depending on the size of the house, the number of stories and the material. Fiber cement takes longer than vinyl because it’s heavier and cut differently. Rain and wind can add days. We’ll give you a realistic schedule with your quote.

Does new siding make a home more energy efficient?

Yes. New siding over a proper weather barrier seals air leaks and improves insulation, which cuts heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. That can lower heating and cooling costs and make the house more comfortable, especially in rooms along exterior walls.

Planning the whole exterior

If your roof or gutters are also due, plan them with the siding. The roof replacement should come first, so the flashing where the roof meets the walls is done before siding goes over it. New gutters go up last, matched to the new trim color. We handle all three.
