A skylight brings daylight into rooms that windows can’t reach: a dark hallway, a stairwell, a bathroom, a kitchen in the middle of the house, a finished attic. Done right, it makes the room feel bigger and brighter all day long. Done wrong, it’s a hole in the roof that leaks.

Home Crew Construction installs, replaces and repairs roof skylights on Long Island for homes across Nassau County and Suffolk County. We’re roofers first, so we treat a skylight as part of the roof. That’s where most skylight problems start, and where they get fixed.

Quick answer: Can you add a skylight to an existing roof on Long Island?

Yes. A skylight can be added to most pitched roofs by framing an opening in the roof, setting the unit and flashing it into the shingles. Home Crew Construction installs, replaces and repairs roof skylights across Nassau and Suffolk County on Long Island, and replacing a roof is the ideal time to add one.

How it works

How a skylight stays dry.

Most skylight leaks come from the flashing around the frame, not the glass. Here is how the pieces go together.

Our skylight services

  • New skylight installation: we find the right spot, frame the opening, set the unit and flash it into the roof.
  • Skylight replacement: old, fogged, cracked or leaking units swapped for new ones, with new flashing.
  • Skylight repair: leaks, failed seals, damaged flashing and cracked glass fixed when the unit itself is still sound.

Types of skylights we install

  • Fixed skylights. They don’t open. The simplest option, for rooms that need light but not ventilation.
  • Venting skylights. They open, by hand or with a motor, to let out heat and moisture. A good fit for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Tubular skylights. A small dome on the roof and a reflective tube down to a ceiling fixture. Good for hallways, closets and small bathrooms where a full skylight won’t fit.
  • Custom skylights. For unusual spaces or specific design needs.

The right choice depends on the room, the roof and whether you need fresh air as well as light. We’ll walk you through the options.

Which rooms suit a skylight?

  • Kitchens. A venting skylight lets cooking heat and steam out and puts daylight over the counters.
  • Bathrooms. Light and ventilation without giving up privacy, and a venting unit helps with moisture.
  • Hallways and stairwells. Interior spaces with no windows are where tubular skylights earn their keep.
  • Finished attics and bonus rooms. Sloped ceilings sit right under the roof, so a skylight is a short, simple opening.
  • Living rooms with vaulted ceilings. A pair of skylights can brighten the whole room.

Before recommending a spot, we check which way the roof faces. A skylight on a south-facing slope gets strong sun and more summer heat; one facing north gives softer, steadier light. That choice matters as much as the size of the unit.

Why do skylights leak?

Illustration · GlassThe glazed panel. Fogged or cracked glass usually means the unit is due for replacement.

Most skylight leaks don’t come through the glass. They come from around it. The usual causes:

  • Failed or badly installed flashing. Flashing is the metal that ties the skylight into the shingles. If it’s missing, bent or rusted, or the installer relied on caulk alone, water gets in.
  • Worn seals and gaskets. The seals between the glass and the frame dry out and crack with age and sun.
  • Condensation. Warm, moist air hitting cold glass can drip and look like a leak, especially over bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Roof problems around the skylight. Worn shingles, packed leaves or ice dams on the uphill side push water where it shouldn’t go.

Re-flashing the skylight properly usually stops the leak. If the unit is old or damaged, replacement is often the better fix. If water is coming in right now, see roof leak repair. We’re open 24/7 for emergencies.

Should you add skylights during a roof replacement?

It’s the ideal time. The shingles around the skylight are already off, so a new unit and its flashing can be tied in with the new roof in one job. You avoid cutting into a brand-new roof later, and you don’t end up with an aging skylight sitting in the middle of new shingles.

We can add or replace skylights as part of a roof replacement. The new roof itself comes with our 10-year labor warranty and a lifetime manufacturer warranty.
