Brick and mortar are porous. They soak up rain like a sponge, and on Long Island that water freezes and thaws all winter. Chimney waterproofing slows that cycle down. We apply a breathable water repellent to the outside of the chimney so rain beads off instead of soaking in. Home Crew Construction waterproofs chimneys across Nassau County and Suffolk County.

Quick answer: Does chimney waterproofing work?

Yes, when it is done right. Chimney waterproofing is a breathable water repellent applied to sound brick and mortar. It stops rain soaking into the masonry but lets trapped moisture escape. Home Crew Construction repairs cracks and joints first, then waterproofs chimneys across Long Island to slow freeze-thaw damage.

Why waterproof a chimney?

  • Less freeze-thaw damage. Dry brick doesn’t spall and crack the way wet brick does.
  • Fewer leaks. Water that doesn’t soak into the chimney can’t run into the house.
  • Longer-lasting mortar. Joints stay sound longer when they aren’t soaked in every storm.
  • Cleaner brick. Less water means less white staining (efflorescence), moss and mildew.

Why the treatment has to be breathable

Illustration · Brick & mortarMortar joints wear out first. Repointing replaces them before water gets into the brick.

A chimney always has some moisture inside it, from the air and from the flue gases. If the brick is sealed with paint or a non-breathable sealer, that moisture gets trapped. When it freezes, it can blow the face off the brick. We use breathable, vapor-permeable water repellents that keep liquid water out but let water vapor escape.

  • Dark, damp-looking patches on the brick that last long after rain.
  • White, powdery staining on the brick.
  • Flaking or spalling brick faces.
  • Water stains inside near the chimney, or water in the firebox.
  • Moss or mildew growing on the chimney.

Our chimney waterproofing process

  1. InspectWe look for the real source of water first. Waterproofing won’t fix a cracked crown, failed flashing or open mortar joints.
  2. RepairWe fix those first: repointing, crown repair, flashing or brick replacement, as needed.
  3. CleanWe clean the brick so the repellent can soak in.
  4. Let it dryThe masonry has to be dry before treatment, so we schedule around the weather.
  5. ApplyWe apply the water repellent evenly to the brick and mortar, then clean up before we leave.

Does every chimney need waterproofing?

Not always, and we will tell you if yours doesn’t. It makes the most sense for chimneys that take a lot of weather: tall chimneys, chimneys on the windward side of the house, and homes near the water. It also pays off on older, softer brick that already shows staining or spalling, and on chimneys that have just been repointed or rebuilt, to protect the new work. A chimney in good condition with dense, hard brick may not need it yet.

When is the best time to waterproof a chimney?

Late spring through early fall, in a dry spell. The brick has to be dry for the repellent to soak in, and any new mortar or concrete has to cure first. The goal is to have the chimney treated before the first hard freeze, so the brick goes into winter dry. If your chimney needs repointing or a new crown, we plan the waterproofing as the last step of the same project.

The water repellent goes on the brick and mortar faces. The crown gets its own crown sealant, and the flashing is handled as metal work. Treating each part the right way is what makes the whole chimney hold up.

Waterproofing protects sound masonry. It doesn’t hold crumbling mortar together, close cracks or replace failed flashing. It isn’t permanent either: water repellents wear off over time and need to be reapplied, which a yearly inspection will catch. If your chimney is already leaking, the cause is usually somewhere else, so we find it first. For leaks, cracks and loose brick, start with chimney repair.

Chimney waterproofing FAQ

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

Can I waterproof a chimney that is already leaking?

Only after the leak is fixed. Leaks usually come from the flashing, the crown or open mortar joints. We repair those first, then waterproof the brick.

02

Will waterproofing change how my brick looks?

A breathable water repellent soaks into the brick rather than forming a shiny film, so the chimney should look much the same.

03

Can new mortar be waterproofed right away?

No. New mortar and concrete need time to cure before a water repellent goes on. We schedule the treatment once the repairs are ready for it.

04

How often does a chimney need to be waterproofed?

It depends on the product and how exposed the chimney is. We tell you what to expect for the product we use, and your yearly inspection will show when it is time to reapply.
