The chimney crown is the slab that covers the top of the chimney around the flue. Its job is to shed water off the chimney and away from the brick, and it takes more weather than almost any other part of the house. Home Crew Construction repairs and replaces chimney crowns across Long Island, in Nassau County and Suffolk County.

Quick answer: What is a chimney crown, and why does it crack?

A chimney crown is the concrete or metal slab on top of a masonry chimney that sheds rain away from the brick. Crowns crack from freeze-thaw cycles, age and poor original construction. Home Crew Construction repairs and replaces chimney crowns across Long Island before the damage spreads to the brick and mortar below.

Chimney crown vs. chimney cap

People mix these up. The crown is the solid slab that seals the top of the masonry. The chimney cap is the metal cover with mesh sides that sits over the flue opening to keep rain, animals and debris out of the flue itself. Most chimneys need both.

Signs you need chimney crown repair

Illustration · CrownThe sloped concrete slab that seals the top of the masonry.
  • Cracks in the crown, even hairline ones.
  • Crumbling or flaking concrete at the top of the chimney.
  • Pieces of concrete on the roof or in the gutters.
  • Water in the firebox, or stains on the ceiling near the chimney.
  • Spalling or loose bricks in the top few rows.
  • A crown that sits flat, with no slope or overhang, so water sits on it.

A crown is hard to see from the ground, so the first sign is often a leak inside or damage to the top bricks.

Why do chimney crowns crack?

Many crowns are built from a thin layer of mortar instead of properly formed concrete. They have too little slope, no overhang, and are set tight against the flue tile with no room to move. Every winter, water gets into small cracks, freezes and widens them. Once the crown is cracked, water runs down into the chimney and the damage spreads to the brick and mortar below.

What happens if you ignore a cracked crown?

Illustration · Brick & mortarMortar joints wear out first. Repointing replaces them before water gets into the brick.

Water that gets past the crown runs down inside the chimney. The top rows of brick soak it up and start to spall, the mortar joints below loosen, and the flue tiles can crack. Inside the house, it shows up as rust on the damper, water in the firebox or a stain on the ceiling beside the chimney. Left for a few winters, a crown that could have been sealed turns into a new crown plus a rebuild of the top of the chimney.

Crown repair or crown replacement?

Repair works when the crown is basically sound with minor cracking. We clean the surface, fill the cracks and apply a crown sealant that stays flexible as the crown expands and contracts.

Replacement is the fix when the crown is broken up, badly cracked or built wrong. We remove the old crown and form and pour a new one with:

  • A slope that sends water off the chimney.
  • An overhang with a drip edge, so water falls clear of the brick instead of running down it.
  • A small gap around the flue tile, so the flue can expand without cracking the crown.

  3. Do the workWe repair the crown, or remove it and build a new one.
  4. FinishWe add or replace the cap if needed and clean up before we leave.

If water has already damaged the top of the chimney, we may recommend repointing or a partial chimney rebuild at the same time.

Keeping your crown in good shape

Have the crown checked once a year, and after any big winter storm. A small crack sealed early is a far smaller job than a new crown and new top bricks later. A breathable waterproofing treatment on the brick adds another layer of protection.

Chimney crowns FAQ

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

Can a cracked chimney crown be repaired?

Yes, if the cracks are small and the crown is otherwise sound. We fill the cracks and seal the crown. If it is broken up or was built wrong, replacement is the lasting fix.

02

Is a chimney crown the same as a chimney cap?

No. The crown is the solid slab that seals the top of the masonry. The cap is the metal cover with mesh sides that sits over the flue opening. Most chimneys need both.

03

How do I know if my chimney crown is damaged?

Look for pieces of concrete on the roof or in the gutters, water in the firebox, and damaged bricks at the top of the chimney. The crown itself is hard to see from the ground, so an inspection is the surest way to know.

04

Why does my chimney crown keep cracking?

Usually because it was built from thin mortar instead of formed concrete, has no overhang, or is set tight against the flue with no room to expand. Patching a badly built crown only buys time. Replacing it properly stops the cycle.
